Stock indexes were mixed in early trading Wednesday as investors await the release of the Federal Open Market Committee’s minutes from its last meeting.
The FOMC will release the September meeting minutes at 2 p.m. in Washington. Members voted to leave its base rate at 0.25% to 0.5% last month despite a strengthening job market. Oil prices turned lower as US benchmark West Texas Intermediate futures declined 1.3% and Brent crude, the international standard, dropped 1.1%.
In equities, shares of Newell Brands (NWL) were higher after to sell its tools business to Stanley Black & Decker (SWK) for $1.95 billion.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.1% while the Standard & Poor’s 500 added 0.1%. The Nasdaq Composite declined 0.2%.
Globally, the FTSE fell 0.5%, the Nikkei added 0.1% and the Shanghai Composite dropped 0.2%.
