From Foe to Friend? The makeover of Iraq‘s Muqtada al-Sadr
It‘s time to form a government now that Muqtada al-Sadr’s coalition has won the Iraqi election. The one-time archnemesis of US-led forces in Iraq fled to Iran after his sectarian militia was run out of Baghdad a decade ago. The cleric is back with a reformist agenda drawing in seculars and the left. Is his “Iraq first” message for real? Between US troops in Iraq training the national army and Tehran funding Shiite militias, who will hold sway with the next government?
