I was both disturbed and saddened by your article noting that Vic‘s Espresso at the Community Plaza Shopping Center was closing due to Austin Real Estate Services‘ cancellation of Vic‘s lease. This is an example of greed and the mighty dollar overshadowing good business practices. Yes, good business practices include giving long term, reliable, financially sound and community minded tenants fair treatment on renewing existing leases.
Mike Hilliker is an astute businessman, highly regarded in the community and a welcoming proprietor. He greets his customers on a first name (basis) and is a respected employer, as reflected by the long-term tenure of many of his employees. He has energetically sponsored junior baseball teams over many years and supported EFAA with his contributions.
The shop is unique with it‘s weekly jazz jam sessions and local art on display. It is a gathering place for friends to meet and a pillar of the neighborhood. The closing of Vic‘s leaves a void of coffee shops along Broadway north of Pearl Street. I hope the landlord thinks very seriously about the impact of their actions.
